Abstract

In this study, the suitability of PTFE-based coating deposited on AA3003 Aluminum alloy by a non-conventional method for corrosion and wear protection was investigated. The coatings were deposited from a mixture of PTFE and alumina powders at room temperature and atmospheric pressure . The coatings were characterised with SEM/EDX, XRD and contact angle goniometer. The corrosion performance of the coatings in 3.5 wt% NaCl was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and wear performance was investigated using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The results indicated that the coatings exhibited about threefold reductions in the wear rate of AA3003 alloy and a twofold increase in its polarisation resistance. This improvement was discussed in relation to the characterisation results.
